Fall 2004 Forward to a Friend

Share the road with trucks with the same caution and courtesy that you afford other vehicles. When entering a highway or changing lanes, put on your turn signal and use your side mirrors to look into the lane you’re entering. Remember the locations of a truck’s blind spots.

The truck driver’s blind spots are shown in yellow.

To help prevent this or any other type of accident, keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you – at least two seconds. Count “one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two” between the time the vehicle in front reaches an arbitrary marker and the time you reach it. That amounts to about three car lengths when traveling at 20 mph or nine car lengths when traveling at 60 mph.

Be aware of your surroundings. Adjust your mirrors properly. Before turning on your car:
  1. Adjust the interior mirror to frame the rear window.
  2. From your normal driving position, put your head against the driver-side window and adjust your left exterior mirror to show as little of the left side of your vehicle as possible.
  3. Move your head to the centerline of the car. Adjust your right exterior mirror to show as little of the right side of your car as possible.
Always check your mirrors for proper adjustment before starting to drive.
