MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the second-annual Subaru Primal Quest adventure race, beginning September 5, 2003, in the South Lake Tahoe region of California and Nevada. The expedition-length race will feature trekking, orienteering, flat water and white water paddling, mountain biking, caving and rope work. Team and volunteer registration opened in February, and the 75 available competitive spots were filled in minutes. The remaining 25 spots were reserved for the sport’s elite teams, including those that finished in the top five of the 2002 Subaru Primal Quest or in the top two at other races, including the Raid Gauloises, the Eco-Challenge and the Southern Traverse. Subaru Primal Quest co-race director Maria Burton says that a few of the reserved entries were assigned to athletes who serve on the Racer Advisory Panel: “Our Advisory Panel is enormously important to ensuring that this remains a racer’s race: That includes athletes who may not necessarily be elite racers, but who embody the spirit of adventure racing and give us a valuable insight into the needs of the entire field.” Race director Dan Barger expressed appreciation for the ongoing support of Subaru of America for the title sponsorship: “Subaru’s commitment to the outdoors is well-known, and aligns closely with our own leave no trace philosophy.” For event details, visit www.subaruprimalquest.com.
