Making Way for Ducklings

I recently took a trip to Madison, Wisconsin, because my boyfriend, Travis Strong, was accepted to veterinary school at the University of Wisconsin. As we drove through the city, we passed a Subaru dealership and service center and noticed several employees on their stomachs in the parking lot.

A mother duck was trying to cross a busy street with her many ducklings following her. Sadly, three had been killed in the road, but the Subaru staff was carefully collecting the remaining ducklings and moving them out of harm’s way. One employee got a cardboard box and a water dish for the babies, while other staff members tried to round up the others. Then came the monumental feat of getting the mother duck to follow the box of peeping ducklings down a few streets to a safe park with a lake.

The momma duck called out to her ducklings. Travis let the ducklings waddle out of the box, and they raced to their mom, who led them to water. It was quite an emotional moment for everyone involved to see the family floating peacefully together again.

Turkeys on a Subaru.

A Forester for the Birds

I think these turkeys were trying to catch the best ride out of town before Thanksgiving! My 1998 Forester still has a smooth ride.

Birding Article Follow-Up: The Naming of Birds

Several readers suggested that the cover article on birding in Fall 2008 Drive should have had captions for the illustrated birds. How right you are!

On the cover was a great horned owl.

See the other birds identified below.

Red Cross

One of a Kind

The letter below is from my very dear friend Johnna Suter, a volunteer here at the American Red Cross of Central Maryland:

Subaru can be proud. I have over 92,000 miles on my 2003 Subaru Forester and at least three-quarters of the miles are driven for the American Red Cross Emergency Services department. The trunk is loaded with emergency supplies to be given to people of tragic events such as home fires. Most of the miles are driven in the city of Baltimore.

Although “she” is not as old as I am (78), I certainly plan on “her” long and good life.

The buckets in the picture are for a fundraiser at one of the great sporting events in town to help the American Red Cross with the hurricane emergency assistance.

– Johnna

Now here’s the rest of the story. Johnna is not only one of our most dedicated disaster volunteers, she is our primary dispatcher, and she responds all hours of the day and night to people in need. She never says no. She never turns her back. Ms. Suter was the 2006 recipient of the Clara Barton award, the most prestigious and honored award to be bestowed on a Central Maryland Chapter volunteer.

Her smile and her spunk are like no other. She’s a one of a kind.

Like Parents, Like Son

My parents’ first Subaru was a 2005 Forester. Since then, they [Jane and Duane Brevik] have owned three of them and absolutely love them.

When moving out of the house, I used their Forester and also fell in love. I bought a 2007 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, and it is perfect for me.

Each summer, we enjoy taking our kayaks on top of our Subarus and exploring various lakes and rivers in northern Minnesota. We even tackled Lake Superior this summer. My 5-foot-2-inch mother especially likes the fact that she can get her kayak on top of the Forester by herself.

Can’t Get Enough Subaru

When I married several years ago, I bought my wife a 2002 WRX Sedan, which she loves driving all the time. After driving her WRX a few times, I liked it so much that I bought myself a 2004 WRX STI. We thought we had enough Subaru.

But since my son was born, we have been constantly looking for more space in our cars to carry his stuff. Without hesitation, we bought a brand-new 2009 Forester XT Limited.

We just can’t get enough Subaru. Is this love for Subaru? I think it is.
